You rebuild several hundred heads of a specific type under a master machinist and you will then know by looking.
IMHO - if you can't afford to rebuild them you should not own a 40 year old car. They take special care.
One option would be to find a machine shop that is known for A+ work and start dropping by to get to know them. Sweep up small messes on their floors. Help sort a pile of hardware that they haven't had time to. Let them know you want to learn about heads etc and see if they will give you some small jobs at minimum wage or trade for a few hours of work on your heads. That is how I got my foot in the door. Show that you want to learn. |

I vacuumed and Swiftered today, but Mrs Westfabulous doesn't pay very well. Maybe I should find a machine shop?! |

| Just post some pictures; we'll be happy to help you if we can. Heard the saying, "garbage in = garbage out"? You are only going to get marginal information at best based on the lack of information that you have provided. |

Can you wiggle the valve stems in the guides more than the tiniest bit? Is there any obvious recession of the valve seats into the heads or the valves into the seats? Are all the valve adjusting screws turned in about the same number of turns?
Spray the inside of the head with WD40 and then wipe it clean. Can you see any cracks anywhere, especially around the spark plug holes and the valve seats?
With the valves removed, what do the contact areas of the valves and seats look like? |
