So I am considering buying this Beautiful Super but at about 50-60 the steering wheel is just trying to go side to side.. I mean, it's driveable but very noticeable.
So what could this be and what could be involved in fixing it?
Thanks...

Spock says do the logical thing and go to my site and look in the technical stuff section and under suspension category read my article on how to fix the shakes.

Change that statement from "a strut tower brace will help a lot" to "a strut tower brace may help some".
Bushings, ball joints, wheel bearings first.... strut brace last. |

Don't forget everything else :D I agree with you strut brace last and or maybe not at all if the front end is fixed properly.
Tires , check them good( check for tread separation/ quality of tire makes a huge difference, flat spots from sitting too long in one place) to see if the rims are "true" and have them all balanced by a pro.... ask them to check the rims... not just balance things... otherwise some tire shops will just slap alot of weight on a bad rim/tire and call it good. They make more $$ on high end rim and tire customers nowdays and pay little attention to regular folks and especially VW's.
the tie rod ends, the center link, the idle arm bushings, and the say bar bushings( often an overlooked item)... and the strut cartridges themselves.
All this, and what superman spelled out can cause the shakes...
Alignment is also critical... bad alignment alone can cause the shakes.
Make sure you get all the worn out components replaced first or you will be paying for alignment repeatedly...
Supers get a bad rap as the front end is alot more costly to repair than the regular Beetle.( more parts to fail) And since the all work together as a team...if you do not replace all the bad parts at once or within short order of one another then other components fail and you are perpetually " chasing your tail" ( and losing your ass in the process I might ad)
Steering dampner would not cause the shakes at such high speed, a bad dampner usually shows up at between 25 and 35 mph.
good luck! :) |
