hey again- I am here every once in a while with a pretty basic question or two as I am still figuring out the very basic ins and outs of my 71 Westfalia. So here is another simple question. I have just finished my first tune up of my new bus and trying to set the timing. I followed the Muir book with the whole static light trick but when I start the bus it sounds awful, way worse than before. Upon further reading on line it appears the distributor has been changed to a 009 and therefore the Muir stuff would be obsolete? Does this mean the timing marks change? I have read all kinds of stuff about 32 degrees BTDC and 5 degrees this and that but this makes little sense to my green mind as the only thing I have to go by are two filed notches on the pulley which I assume are TDC. So my basic question is: how do I time this beast? Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Thanks a bunch. Oh yeah it is a 1600 cc, Single carb engine with a 009 distributor with no vacuum lines. Thanks again for enduring my ignorance...

how can I be sure that it actually is a 009?

The simplest way to solve the problem is to buy a degree pulley and replace the one you have with it,then with a timing light run the engine up to about 2500 rpm and set it to 32 deg before tdc and then tighten the clamp. Part of your problem may be the solex carb and 009 combination. It will hesitate apon acceleration if the carb is not modified.

Look on the side of the distributor and there will be some #'s stamped into it that will end with 009.

your right, it does hesitate on acceleration almost like its gonna die and then picks back up but seems to get better as the car warms up. Whats the modification for the carb to remedy this? Also is there a good short term solution for the timing so I can drive my bus until i get a numbered pulley? thanks again...ST :robot:

I remove the accelerator pump squirt tube and drill it out from it's current size of 55 to a 65 or 70 (usually 70) ,and that pretty much gets rid of it unless it's real cold and the engine hasn't completely warmed up. The other way to fix it is to buy a good vacuum advance distributor and replace the 009. Good luck.

hey guys, this guy doesnt know enough yet to understand what you mean. m not trying to offend you bud. ok, to set number one cylinder to tdc, which is what you need to do to set base timing, is to take out the spark plug for number 1 cylinder, ONLY WHEN THE ENGINES COLD DO YOU DO THIS NEXT THING, put your finger in the spark plug hole, and rotate the crankshaft with a breaker bar or whatever until you feel air trying to push your finger out of the hole, it will be a pretty strong push. then you should have the correct cylinder to tdc. the thing about having a pulley with the correct marks is very important for use with a timing light so that you can get it set right, the timing light will usually have a degree scale for you to use but you need a pulley with the degrees marked on it already so that you know what to look for with the light, when the timiing is right, when the lights flashing at your specific timing setting the timing mark you will see with the engine running will be steady in one place, not all jumpy, and the engine will be running smooth. i hope this makes some sense to you. let me know how it goes friend.

I just recently got a great deal on a project bus. I've been Tackling one ailment at a time and loving every minute of it. This engine also has a 009 and solex set up ( 30 pict 1 ) It too hesitates on acceleration unless I really eaz into the pedel. Is there any other way to modify the carb besides drilling out the squirt tube or is that the only way to do it?

Here is another fix? I tried it didn't like it. Went back to vacuum. Life is good.

This is apparently the problem, and the fix:
