I have a '68 VW squareback that I am currently getting an engine built for. I was planning on using a spin on oil filter. A friend mentioned that this engine has an upper and lower mount on the rear. I didn't know this. can you use a spin on oil filter on these engines?
The case is a type 3 case. |

| Why not. There are a lot of IRS cars out there with an add on oil filter. In your case, you could even do like John J did, and cut off the right side of the hanger bar, and mount the filter on the left side of the hanger bar. Works really slick too. You'll have to decide which way you're going to plumb it at the engine though. |

I don't think the hanger bar would clear that type of filter. Most people run flexible line to a remote oil filter. That way you only need to clearance the bar for the line fitting.
My MOFOCO engine was going to have that type of filter. I opted for the regular oil pump cover and went with a thin-line sump and filter from CB Performance:

| '68 is the last of the swing axles, unless it's an Automatic- (RARE in '68!) or it's been converted. Swing axle means no rear engine carrier over the oil pump. |

| Tram, it isn't an automatic. So does that mean I won't have a problem with the spin on filter where it is? |

If it's a true unmolested '68, then no, you won't- as long as it clears the fan housing. |
