| Anyone in San Diego who wants a roo bar built for a 68-71 let me know. I've decided to go without the roo bar and use the funds for other projects. Picts (and an ad) will follow soon. |

Was this the thread where making tow bars was mentioned too? Who was doing that? I'm seriously wondering about getting a square hitch towbar made and having it imported. Seems like everyone here makes them based off pre-made templates and won't do anything else now. It's like how a lot of exhaust shops just order the premade exhaust and fit it *sigh*.
Every towbar I have found is puny compared to mine. However I can't use mine because of a few issues.
When they were cheap and plentiful I got this one and had to hack off part of the tongue and tongue mount thing and weld them together because I needed to tow a trailer in a hurry and the towbar wouldn't fit with my exhaust.
The towbar doesn't really fit with my current exhaust either. The muffler gets friendly with it.
The frame rails are damaged and I'd really like one of the ones that also has the bracket made for horizontal through holes for extra strength. When I repair the bottom 6 bumper mount points it'll still be a repair no matter what and probably more susceptible to fatigue failure.
Can anyone help? |

I've been looking for a long time for a set of the original VW Australian Roo Bars to complete the restoration of my 1970 bay. I've just about given up, as I can't seem to find any to fit the early bay. Does anybody have a set they are willing to sell me?
I also have a friend who is a professional welder/fabricator who said he can make me a set if I can get one for him to copy. If someone is willing to let me rent their Roo's I am willing to pay to rent them AND have him make an extra set for you plus any custom accessories you want such as a spare tire mount. I also do a lot of camping, so I thought about having him make me some stone guards to fit over the headlight areas of the roo bars.
Anybody? :?: |

Wish I'd seen that ages ago! Sellers usually can't get rid of the things here. they pull off the roo bars from dead VWs or ones that are being restored without them. I see them fail to sell for $50 regularly. It's just not worth my time to take the drive to pick them up!
I'd love to get one of the sorts with the tube horizontals and the I frame (don't know the term) verticals. They look pretty good. Probably easier to mount a radiator on too  .
johncurl, if shipping wasn't such a bitchI'd just tell you to import. It's a shame seeing all those roo bars going to the scrap metal places.
Mine might only be tube, but whoever fitted it welded four tabs on to the four front frame members to mount it so it's the most solidly mounted one I've ever seen. Because it slopes back slightly I'd say it took an impact at some point, but where is anyone's guess. Also because the centre two mount bars are offset longitudinally from the outers it braces the whole lot and it doesn't wobble at all. |

I figured the same, but if made from aluminum it might not be so bad, and could still be powder coated. Even as is, I'm sure it's nothing a pair of gas struts couldn't help... Like (dare I say) on the Vanagons...

LOL I hadn't noticed that! Took me a minute to find, I was like WTF?! A friend took the pic, while down in Key West! |

up...north. You mean here, right? That looks like a Falcon XA-XC pano, a datsun 120Y and of course VWs.
As for the green one, where was that photo taken? RHD and mounted police could easily be Aus too. Yes we still have mounted police. They patrol cities and large towns usually.
If it is an aussie shot, is that really a Westfalia? If so, wow! that's about as uncommon as they get.
edit: whoops! Yellow lines, wrong side of the road and foreign architecture on the green bay pic. My mistake.
edit again: wrong number of arms too! Ahhh it's a 4 armed mutant! or the driver is on the left. |
