Hey guys,
picked up a '71 super beetle not too long ago and been having a problem with reverse.
1600 dual port / manual trans
Sometimes it will work but the majority of the time it'll slip out.
Tried holding the shifter in there but it still slipped out and grinded a little.
replaced -
shift rod bushing
shift coupler
shifter
adjusted stop plate
although the above did make a big difference it still slips out of reverse :(
next step I'm assuming is a new transmission? |

not very long at all, even if I hold it in it slips out. |

Most likely, reverse idler gear is worn out. Depending on how long the transmission has been bad, if it was "held in" to reverse it may have destroyed the 1-2 slider, which is NLA.
Best to find a good-used transmission, a rebuilt unit or go nuts with a new unit.

| letting it slip out of gear is alot worse than holding it into gear. |

Yeah thats what I was thinking too :(
Do you think getting a used transmission would be worth it? It's definitely the most economical and I am kind of on a budget.
Just don't want to buy one and have problems with it. |

| Have you tried adjusting the shifter yet? I was having the same problem and all I did was loosen the two bolts, jam the shifter into first gear, then tighten the bolts down. I think my revers lockout plate had moved a little and was causing reverse to pop out. |

there are 2 things.
first off there is a test.
and one more part you forgot.
the rear engine mounts, can go bad easy. and look ok.
if they are bad, the tranny moves under engine torque reactions.and it pops out of gear.
R an 4 are the 2 common fails.
first the test.
remove the shift coupling
shift to reverse by hand on the hockey stick shaft.
start motor with clutch in.
release clutch.
does it hold?
now you know....
but how..... well that answer is here
imagine the hocky stick (not in photo) but looks like golf putter.
you turn it CW max and pull.
