I don't know much about TDI engines specifially in vanagons.
The topic of stronger (higher output) engines with the 4 speed has been discussed here several times.
This thread is a good place to start reading.

The specialist www.aatransaxle.com that rebuilt my 4-speed recommended Swepco 201 gear oil for slightly higher output than normal.
For high power and torque (like the TDI) he reccomended Swepco 210)

I don't know if Swepco is available in Europe, so you may need to find an equivalent.
Depending on how many N-m your engine makes, you may need additional upgrades to your gearbox. I believe oiling plates and an upgrade to the pinion bearing retainer are popular.
Their is a large amount of experience on this forum, I am sure some of the diesel guys will chime in.
Edit: http://www.weddleindustries.com/ Supplies many parts for VW transaxles.
You may want to consult Daryl at AA transaxle, he really knows these gearboxes. |

You should read this thread as well, lots of pictures. The author is building a vanagon 4-speed transmission for a Subaru SVX engine.

| I am using Swepco 210 in my TDI powered Vanagon. It has the 4.14 Ring and Pinion and .77 4th gear. I have only added larger nozzles, but drive the van very conservatively. I am also running a stock vanagon diesel clutch, which should have failed by now according to everything I read, but I must be easy on it all. |

80w-140 seems like it matches swepco 210. I believe GL-5 oils are acceptable as long as they also meet GL-4. The coating on the synchronizer rings isn't compatible with some of the GL-5 additives.
I would check with the manufacturer to make sure their oil is compatible with the VW molybdenum and brass synchronizer rings. My thoughts are that most MT1 oils should be OK to use. |
