I have a universal case that this afternoon I have been getting ready to but in my son's 72 fastback. I have been using the parts off of his current motor that is a true type 3 case. As I went to put on the rear hanger it is hitting on the oil fill tube and not allowing me to line up the bolts also I fear that I may hit part of the case on the opposite side once I get past the oil fill tube. Any ideas on this issue? Is something the wrong year?

did you already mount the fan housing?? the hanger may ne to be installed 1st then the oil tube, sounds like the trouble I ran into many years ago and I think that was the solutuon because I didnt need to grind or replace any parts

only thing mounted is the oil filler. I was doing the reverse of how I took it off but this is a different motor I am putting everything on as well.

Any chance you have it backards (front to back)?

Nope it is on the correct way top to bottom and front to back. It is only off a small amount. With the lower bolt in the upper right one is about half a hole off and the upper left is over 3/4 off. I just did not want to start beating and bending on items out of anger.

Just to be clear... it's the bolts holding the hanger on the block that aren't lining up? (or is it the bolts holding the hanger to the body mounts?)

fixed by having the hanger loosely bolted and the oil filler loosely bolted and following a rotation order in tightening all bolts.

The oil filler is set with a special gauge by VW so that the dipstick reads correctly. Moving it may give an inaccurate reading, though mine didn't seem to have much movement. I was going to suggest loosening things up first, but lacking the gauge I hesitated to suggest it.
