View original topic: Engine is out - what should I change in there? Goto page 1, 2  Next

Following my earlier threads about engine problems, Harvee's currently at the garage where they've got the engine out - he's getting new cylinder heads, pistons, cylinders, hydraulic cam followers and some other bits and pieces.

I've spoken to them and they're happy for me to come down and do anything I need to that area of the bus while the engine is out, so what should I be looking at?

I'm thinking:

Fuel lines
Gas tank sender (he only reads to half-full, even when the pump cuts out)

What else would you do with that sort of access?

Order list so far:

German Supply
Fuel Hose Kit Fuel Injected Bus 75-79, Vanagon 80-83.5 - ordered
Fuel Vapour Canister Hose Kit Bus '78-'79 - ordered

Oil cooler seals...oil filter mount gasket and oil filler gasket

samwise Thu Jun 21, 2012 3:26 pm

Added oil cooler seals (they may be in the set that they've already got, but at CAD2 for the pair from German Supply, it can't harm

Oil filter mount gasket? Did you mean oil filler, not filter? Like this?

Breather pipes above the fuel tank, all the fuel lines & fuel filter. Don't forget the breather hidden behind the spare wheel well. :D

Fuel lines are in my order from German Supply
Fuel filter is already in the bus ready to be fitted

Breather pipes - hmm, OK, lets look for them, I wonder if they're included in the German Supply kit?

From Ratwell:

This is going to cost a fortune, but hey, at least they'll be done!

german supply sells fuel and breather kits, you should also replace fuel filler grommet depending on you year. Pull and clean gas tank, if rusted it needs to be treated and repainted. Clean and degrease engine bay. Maybe even repaint engine bay depending how far you want to take this. oh check seals on side marker lights, if bad replace seals and pop out the plastic achors and use nuts bolt and washer to put markers back on. Paint fire wall. Reseal fire wall. sound proof back gas tank side of firewall.

edit: make sure it a VW or German fuel filler grommet. bus-boys.com has decent ones.

While you are going after fuel lines, inspect the fuel filler neck rubber.

There are 4 short lengths above the fuel tank, one in front of the driver rear light up by the spare wheel well, 1 above the engine lid, 3 on a t-piece above the engine lid & one on the charcoal filter:-

I'm confused on which bit you mean now :?

Part C?

curtis4085 Thu Jun 21, 2012 3:56 pm

replace #'s 1, 6, 9, 24, and 15A in diagram

you may also need to replace this if you have not already

http://www.germansupply.com/home/customer/product.php?productid=18157

Edit #6 can be bought at your local Flaps. it will need to be cut to size. I think ratwell gives the part # for this and also has handy cutting instructions as well.

thats the wrong year diagram your looking at if your bus is a 79.

it looks like this and has same part # but dont buy busdepot as it is cheap looking rubber. http://www.busdepot.com/211201119

call bus-boys and give them the part # 211201119 you want German or VW one.

i would look for a OG NOS VDO fuel sender.

and if your charcoal canister is as old as the bus repack it or call your VW dealer. busdepot sold me mine but i do not see them listed on there website. you may want to call and give them part number to check.

Sit down on the ground in the engine compartment hole. Look at the slime and dirt and start cleaning everything immaculately. Inspect every single thing that you can see in there. Not just in the engine hole but the area in front of the engine. Trans, suspension, brake lines, wiring, etc. Pull the trans and replace the rear shift rod rear bushing and closely inspect the coupler. Pull out the clutch and throttle cables and put new ones in.
Repair all the other problems you will find after you carefully inspect everything within sight. A new engine won't gain you anything when any of the related items fail.

All added to first post - Scott at German Supply is going to love me!

Stuartzickefoose Thu Jun 21, 2012 11:20 pm

can you roll it outside and de grease the engine compartment itself? clean areas to work on things make me more willing to work....;)
