Hi All,

I just got my first Type 3, a '65 Notch and I have a question on the engine case number it has.

The Notch is a 1500S, and from the chassis number and all paperwork I can see it was manufactured between Feb & Mar 65, which ties in with the papers, (I have the service booklet with some stamps, showing the collection date etc..)

In the service book the original engine number is also listed which again matches with the chassis number according to the Samba technical pages, now the engine thats installed now is not the original and again in the service booklet on the first information page new motor 1132481 which matches with the number on the case as well.

Although I have some papers/receipts/and so on, as its all Swedish I can't find anything that relates to this plus most of the papers don't go back further than the late 80's other than the official service book.

It did cover some miles in its early days as it shows 40541km in 1967 and appears to have had a 50000km service in 68 although the actual mileage was not recorded, current reading is 52000km but it must have been around once as some of the control tests for late 80's early 90's show readings of 38000 and less.

It is a super original car and was well taken care of I know its not the original motor but I was hoping there was some way of at least finding out if the motor is the correct type at least

Many Thanks

If you look here you can see late 1500cc cases have the 7th number deviating from the six digit vin that is more common. The reason is that they made more motors than cars for just your example-it was replaced for whatever reason. They also made some cases that were used for industrial aplications.

So the case number you gave looks like a late July 65 replacement before the K code was used for the upcoming 66 production.

Thanks Jason, does the information you gave still hold as I made a typo in the new engine case number and added an extra 1!

It should read "132481" written as six digits in the service book & pretty sure only six digits on the case too (will have to double check again)

Thanks Rich
