I started changing my brake pads today and when i brushed away all the dust there was a big "G" on the side of the caliper so i'm assuming its a Girling. At first i was excited but the news just keeps getting worse and worse. The pads i pulled out were worn down to the backing plates. But the old pads only have one hole? And the pin is in a "u" shape that passes on either side through nothing. Is this acceptable at all? I don't see how they didn't just fall out at some point. I guess the previous owner just threw the single pin pads on? And! the inner piston is very hard to move. its somewhat seized. I'm having trouble sourcing brake pads and rebuild Kits for them? Should i be looking for new calipers? When i look at my haynes manual i'm not even sure if these belong on my car?

Will these work?

Since nobody has chimed in, I thought I would.

Without an appropriate part number, you might not be able to tell for sure what pad you will need. The link that you have listed is for the Rabbit/Golf models, which to my knowledge ( somebody correct me if I am wrong ), and by looking at the Bentley for both the late model KG, and the 75-80 model Rabbit, they appear to be different.

As far as sourcing new calipers, You might want to check the classifieds. IIRC, there were a few rebuilt ATE calipers would should be correct for you based on the description of being single pin.

That's what i'm trying to do is buy a rebuild kit but i'm having trouble finding them... On that link all the pictures of the rebuild kits say "For ATE only" Through searching i know there parts are not interchangeable. I've added some pictures of my calipers to maybe help. I'm just assuming i'm not the only one with these calipers and needed a rebuild kit for them. I checked the classifieds and didn't find anything. There has to be somewhere to buy them online. And i dont want to replace them with cheap calipers or spend a lot of money on new ones...

I have a set of Girling calipers that I am going to rebuild too, however, I don't recall them having the VW stamp in them, but I'll check in the morning.

CIP and KGP&R both sell the kit that you should need if your calipers are in fact for the late model KG.

I ran into the exact same problem, ended up just sticking the caliper parts in a bucket and putting it in the cellar, picked up a set of newer Ghia calipers in the Classifieds.

I honestly looked everywhere on the web for the bits and clips to re-build them, bought a couple of kits that the sellers said would work, and no luck.
