View original topic: Black and Yellow license plates?

Hey everyone
So I have a situation here. I have a 1964 notchback that I want to put black and yellow license plates on and I have them but unfortunately the dmv misrepresented what year the car was on my registration. Will it make a difference if the plates are for a 63 but the registration says 67. I thought black and yellow were from early 60's to 69. I am just curious if I am going to have difficulty at the dmv. I know dmv has the 352 form ??4
Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

See the Cali DMV website, and click on the link for historical license plate designs. That will tell you what was used in what year.

i have gone thru this BS years ago when i had a 68 mustang, and tried to put black and yellow plates on it, back then you could put them on 1962 and older vehicles, as i recall

You should be fine, the only thing you will have to do is put a '67 sticker on your black plates. The rule is that you have to run an original year sticker on the plate and then use the little tabs they send you for your month and current year sticker.

Do a search here in the forums. This topic has been covered extensively and as I recall, there are some pitfalls. Make sure you have all your ducks in a row before you go in to the DMV. It can take up to 6 months before you find out whether or not they are approved/denied.

The California "Year of Manufacture" license plate program (YOM) requires that the plates be "DMV clear," i.e., the numbers are not in use in the DMV database, and that the plates be correct for the year of manufacture of your car (not model year or year first sold). Yellow letters/numbers on black are correct for a '63.

You will need to jump through an extra hoop because you must prove that your car was manufactured in '63. The good news is that there is ample information available showing the month/year of manufacture for particular VW serial numbers. However, you will need to pay a private " DMV Licensed VIN Verifier" to certify the year of manufacture for your car. I used Linda Maddox in Orange County to verify the YOM of my '46 Bantam trailer. I provided her with supporting documents, she did her own online research, and I had my VIN verified within 48 hours.

You probably should correct the DMV records before you apply for your YOM plates. The clerks are easily confused and asking them to do two things at once is asking for trouble.

There is a telephone number you can call to determine whether the plates you have are "DMV clear." Do a google search for California YOM License Plates and you should find several websites with all the information you need.

BTW - The 1963 plates were a new issue of yellow on black plates. "1963" was stamped in the sticker location. No stickers are necessary for a '63 car with a '63 plate. ('62 cars used a 1956 black on yellow plate with a 1962 sticker and '64 cars used a 1963 yellow on black plate with a 1964 sticker.) If you are successful in registering your plates, the DMV should supply you with metal tabs to mount the current month/year stickers above your plates so you don't ruin the collector value of them. Be sure you have both plates - the DMV won't approve just one, and will inspect to be sure you have both.

Good luck.
