View original topic: turning a super into a daily driver

Hi folks, been a while, I've got a 71 super that I haven't driven daily for about a year or two. Can anyone provide me with a guideline or checklist to turning my super into a daily driver? (i.e. what I should do in order to be able to depend on the old girl to drive about 10 km (or approx 6 miles each day) or maybe more.. If you could provide any insight or throw me to the appropriate forum that'd be great! Hope everyone's having a great summer so far with their Vw's! Keep the obsession alive!!

Cheers!

Well, here's a start...sure more will be added by others.

1. Replace all the flexible fuel lines; replace the fuel filter. If it's in engine compartment, move it out.
2. Full tune up -- new plugs, points, condenser, spark plugs; check dwell and time engine; check carb adjustment.
3. Change oil; drop screen and clean it.
4. When was the last time you did any work on brakes? Check shoes and drums; make sure no leaks from wheel cylinders or master. If flex lines to the wheel cylinders are old, replace them now. Consider flushing the brake system with new fluid.
5. Check level of transmission oil. If it's been a while, change it.
6. Check all your light bulbs/headlights.
7. Check tire pressure. Check tires - too old, worn, etc??
8. Put on new windshield wiper blades. Fill your WW fluid reservoir.

Replace all soft gas lines a n d inline filters, get some fresh gas , change the oil , check and adjust brakes as needed, check replace ignition components points rotor cap condenser sparkplugs, adjust valves (check compression) make sure all lights work and no blown fuses,,check replace tires as needed full tune up ,check and see if all you're cooling tin is in place adjust choke and clutch ,...if I missed anything I'm sure someone else will chime in question was the car running good when u parked it?

Good list.

9. Upgrade to front discs. Drums are for show cars -- nobody, anywhere, respects the one car length for each 10 mph that the drums were designed to handle.

Supers make great drivers if the front end is in good shape. Enjoy.

You hit on front end, I say Topline if you are looking for good parts plus ideas... Supers need quality parts to last for daily use... RB

Thanks for the help everyone! It ran swell before I parked it. Is a disc brake conversion a costly one? Thanks again! Really appreciate everyone's help!

I have a '74 Super I'm using as a daily, and it's working out fine mostly stock. I only upgraded parts that make me mad or don't perform well enough.

Drum brakes work ok for 2-3 hard stops. After that, they fade. I don't have occasion to repeatedly slam them, so they're ok.

Topline is the premier supplier for lowered, modified, and some stock. My normal, 40 mile commute requires no canyon burning, so I put on new stock shocks inside stock springs, and poly bushings to quash the shimmy. Ride is good with full travel and handling is stable.

Do the full inspection to make sure there aren't ancient parts in there ready to burst, pop or expire.

Regards,
