Well I got a 64 bug that I've been bring back from the grave, and I put a 1600dp motor in it (witch has a new clutch and throw out bearing to match). Reverse works just fine. but when I put it in to first it shakes like no other, second is not so bad and from there it is fine. But what is causing the shaking? I read something about the clutch cable have to do with this but not sure. any help would be awesome. Btw the transmission has not been in use for close to 17 years (did put new fluid in it).

You are experiencing clutch shudder, confirm that the bowden tube has the right amount of bend in it, and your trans mounts are good and solid

all the time or when you release the clutch? could be cable, bowden tube, adjustment.or possiably a dead cylinder or oil on the disc.dead motor mounts will also do it.

I had this same problem on my ghia. I cut an access hole at the back of the tunnel and one on the other side of the pedal cluster. There are dimensions on this forum to make the holes. Both clutch tube brackets were cracked and the shifter bushing was missing. With the hole it can be replaced and brackets welded.Check the cable hook and the pin it hooks to for wear. Pull the cover off thats under the back seat and check the shifter coupler. I made some cover plates with screws at each corner. Cover with carpet no one will ever see it.

Thanks guys so much for the quick responses. Well it was that clutch tube that needed to be bent. My tube was straight no wonder. So I bent it, and now it drives like a dream. thanks so much guys.

Typically the reason why the bowden tube loses its curve is because the chassis guide tubes welds have broken and the tube can move forward in the tunnel

I would keep an eye on the adjustment. Made washers for mine and thought I was done. Open it up for a look. They don't lose that bow for nothing.

The stock system is junk when using a heavy clutch. Go hydraulic to remove all problems.

This is a good option for the slave cylinder that I have used myself (earlier model though)
