Ok so if you guys havnt noticed I dont mind asking questions when I dont know something so here's another one.....
I know that panels generally were offered with the interior amenities of a beer barrel, but after sitting and staring at the inside of my 62, it has small perfectly placed screw holes everywhere there would have been a possible interior panel, long and short walls, cargo doors, rear corners, etc....I know I have never seen a panel with rear interior panels but was it at least an option or am I dealing with a drill-happy previous owner? It also looks as if it had a headliner at some point.
Also, no there is no M-code plate to go by so its kind of a shot in the dark.

You could order the birth certificate and get the specifics of your M-codes.

sadly that is not an option with this bus.....

tacochris Tue Jun 26, 2012 6:12 am

I thought I might add also, this bus also has what can only be described as the best quality wood floor in it I have ever seen, all special star-head screws are counter-sunk in the slats, its all finished and clean around the edges and VERY well done. I mean Im a bit of a purist but its so nice Im thinking about keeping it in there! Also, it looks like it has a nice factory type insulation installed in the void areas where there would be windows, cut perfectly, installed well. If this is all a PO ad-on then he was a serious badass or a perfectionist.

Very interesting E&B....the type of strip insulation used in those papers is the kind thats in the open areas of my cargo doors...Could possibly be it. Its all just too nice to be done by a PO....looks very factory.

So....that leads me to my next question, if this was an option, does anyone happen to have a picture of a panel with the optional rear interior panels installed? Maybe?

Clara Tue Jun 26, 2012 7:48 am

post up pics of your bus. :D

It is either a skilled PO or a camper company.

this was an option back in the day:

Ok man I'll post up some good detail pics of the interior this evening....The only reason I ever ruled out the camper thing is because it has no windows...I kinda thought all legit camper conversions had some form of windows. Unless Im wrong on that one....

Wasn't there a couple panels that came out of hiding a couple months ago that had all the interior panels, headliner, the whole deal, and it was M-Coded? There was a thread with pictures of at least 2 or 3.

Sorry I'm an idiot, it was Kombi's with interior panels. OOOPs my bad. Sorry to get your hopes up Taco...

I thought the factory pre-drilled all the interior sheet metal regardless of model...

tacochris Tue Jun 26, 2012 10:04 am

Well Im gonna post some pics tonight and see if I can get any closer to figuring this thing out....because of the fact that it has a California re-issue VIN number and no M-code plate Im having to decode this thing in other ways.....
The wood floor in it is SO nice that it almost seems like it should have been a camper at some point but the lack of windows leads me to believe otherwise.

That's never been my experience other than the front doors and rear hatch that used the pushbotton clips.

Bryan67 Tue Jun 26, 2012 10:28 am

I have a pair of NOS cargo doors for my 65 Panel and they have factory drilled holes for door panels in them.

dubstar Tue Jun 26, 2012 1:48 pm

not that it proves anything, but my '63 kombi has what appears to be factory-drilled holes wherever a side panel could have been installed...I thought I read previous posts from everett or someone else with knowledge that this was done at the factory regardless of model...maybe just kombis, not panels? or only during certain years?

Interesting. I've never been able to just swap panels from one bus to another and have the holes line up.

The cargo doors and the rear hatch have holes predrilled from the factory. You can move them from bus to bus without difficulty. I do not think any of the other panels follow a set pattern.
