| I burned a valve yesterday... I don't really have enough money to replace/rebuild the dual port heads atm, but I do have some single port heads. 1) is it even worth it? 2) having a heck of a time finding manifolds. Any ideas? |

Your question is speculative...and highly subjective. Are your single port heads rebuilt or just pulled off an old engine, sitting on a shelf? Are you running a larger than stock motor? What are your expectations of the motor when you swap the heads? You're the one who has to determine 'worth' with regard to your answer.
Single port manifolds are easily found...search the classifieds - they're everywhere. I found at least five pair by searching. |

| you will also need to change the head studs, right? Wish I had a good DP head to send you. Maybe craigslist or scrounge in some friends garages? good luck, not a fun situ to be in |

| My son says that the Carquest machine shop in Junction City is good and does VW machine work. Repairing the 1 bad head seems like your cheapest fix. |

The single port heads were rebuilt a few years ago in anticipation of a project that never came together. I guess what I was going for was if anyone knew specifically that single port dual Webers are overkill/rubbish in stock 16 type 3 engines. I don't push her too hard. I know her engine is pretty tired, the odometer stopped working before the PO ran her intermittently for 8 years.
And as for manifolds, Yeah. I've found single port manifolds, but will they fit the Webers? I've found specific manifolds for Webers, but they're for type 1s and I wasn't sure if they'd fit under the lid. How different is the pattern of the Weber vs all those used, presumably Solex, single port intakes?
Erik G wrote: you will also need to change the head studs, right? I wasn't aware that I needed to. They seem straight. Or is that because the single ports might not fit? I'll check the part #s, but I'm pretty sure they came off a 70 beetle, so being a similar year...

I was under the impression that replacing/rebuilding just one head wasn't a recommended practice. I had never thought to take it out there though. I have a limited budget, but I don't want to set myself up to fail in 2 months either.
I really appreciate your input you guys. |

yes, you will need to change the top middle head studs from short to long when switching from DP to SP. Cylinder head tin is different too now that I think about it.
I can't give you a definet answer on whether ICT's fit on stock SP manifolds. I have wondered that. You can buy single port ICT manifolds for type 3's, I have seen them, just don't remember where. I would start with CB Performance, they seem to have a lot of carb stuff. Remember that 34 Delorto FRD's use the same intakes if that helps |

| ICTs will fit on stock manifolds and vice versa. I have had to do both. As far as switching to SP, its really up to you and what you want out of your motor. I run a stock 1600SP in my notch and though its not a rocket ship, it pulls very well and for the kind of driving I like to do on winding, twisty mountain roads it does great. I have run a DP in the sam car breifly and liked it too, but for different reasons... faster off the line, but not as much torquey acceleration. |
