I am new to aircooled VWs. I have a type 4 motor from an early 80s Vanagon. 2000cc. Fuel injected. I want to build a rail with a type 1 IRS. I would like to use this motor but I don't know what all I need for parts. I want to go with dual carbs, off road exhaust, and big bore kit. I know this will bolt up to the beetle trans. And I know I will have to figure out what to use for the starter and flywheel. Anyone do this swap? Help!!!!!!!!

I've run one in my old rail, but I used a 6-rib. Can't help you with the conversion to type 1 trans. Check out http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/store/home.php for all your type 4 questions and parts. Jake is the expert on these engines, and his forum on that site is very helpful. These engines are great, but expect to pay $$$ for parts, especially aftermarket.

the type 4 clutch does not fit the type 1 transaxle. you would need to change the flywheel and use a 200 mm clutch/pressure plate.

You can use a flywheel and clutch setup from a 1700bus.
