| I have a chance to grab a 85 Vanagon for cheap but it needs a water pump. I've done this on other cars, but being an older bus owner, I've never touched a vanagon. Any big deal? |

it all depends on your patience. things you'll need to know. remove your belts. p/s and a/c add to the work. buy a water-pump from a VW dealer. when you find yourself re-doing the job it will be clear if you did not. normally i would't say this, but trust me. once the pump is exposed, remove the pully and the 6mm hex head nuts. definately clean the threads before re-installing. definately make sure your gasketing surfaces are clean. you'll need to bleed the system after to purge air. should take you a few hours if it's the first one and a great opportunity to replace your belts.
geoff
p.s. purging the air from your cooling system is essential, and although water pumps do fail take a good look for any signs of coolant leaking from your head gaskets. sometimes a failed water-pump is a sign of a bigger problem. |
