| I was debating on putting a 34 pict 3 on my 1600DP daily driver but was wondering if a 30,31 lift would be a better choice for reliability and fuel economy? |

As long as the carb is in good condition, reliability should not be an issue. I've gotten up to 36mpg on my 34 pict.

| 34 pict is stock. Stock will work great. But that said, stock vw motors are a bit under carbed and can benefit from a better carv. Fuel mileage may suffer. |

If you use the 34 pair it with a matched sdva distributor.
(your basically going to end up with a stock 1600dp) |

| Dual Dellorto 36 DRLAs or dual Weber 40 IDFs will do wonders for a 1600 DP and get great mpg. |

| Another vote for 36 DRLA's. I had a set on my old 1600 and they made enough difference that I'll never use a stock carb again on a driver. Good mileage too, it would average ~30 mpg city/hwy mix with a somewhat heavy foot. I got a peak of 36.25 mpg pure highway mileage. |

For economy, Kads and Solex 35 PDSIT both work very well...if attention is payed to jetting and proper setup. My old set of 35s got far better mileage, power, torque on a 1641 with 110 cam and beefed up heads. I actually got 2-4 more miles per gallon when I switched over from 009 with Solex H30/31 to Scat 35 kit with 034 distributor. Sometimes it was better. The bad thing about 35 Solex's is the lack of parts available.
We just installed old Brazilian Kads on my friends Art Thraen built 1600. Really woke it up! He is very happy with the engine now...it was a turd before. For some reason, he doesnt have any kind of noticeable flat spot, even with the 009. Tech articles are good on AJ's site about tuning Kads.
Personally, once I got into Weber carbs, I wouldnt use anything else. They are actually pretty easy to tune and disassemble once you do it a few times. John's tech articles are good and helpful. Weber carbs are also easy to get parts for. |
