With oil burning getting on the embarrassing side I'm thinking a freshen up. I'm thinking just rebuild to stock at the moment - and later down the track build something a lot bigger.

So - my question is though.. If I was to hot it ever so slightly.. perhaps a cam or better flowing heads, will the stock injection and ECU put up with it?
If not then I will stick with all stock parts.

Can we get a list going of what is possible - even perhaps a 1641 kit without having to change the stock injection setup.

If you want the stock injection to work don't make any mods to the engine mechanicals. Keep stock displacement, stock cam, stock heads ect.

Anything other than a stock cam will render your FI useless. I think you should just stick with stock.

Build it big and nasty, then upgrade to MS and run some ITB's, either GSXR's like me or any of the arious IDF pattern ones, whooohooo!

I've been thinking about the Jenvey DCNF TB's, for a big nasty T4 MS build.. Someday...

But to the OP, stock is the way to go if you can. Keep your FI if it's already there.

I got a set of forged 103mm p/c's sitting in my storage shed ;)

Stock it is. I'd rather sell this engine down the track as a great runner. The fuel injected 3s are rare here in oz.
Then will be a 1916 with CB quick tune as a buildHow's the notice.. Desh is in NZ and I'm going to a friends. Cheers though next year.

Stock displacement. Stock valves.

That doesn't mean stock engine. Counter weighted crank, clean-up ports and combustion chambers, balanced internals, .040" total deck height. Build it right and it will be more fun and efficient.

Now yhat's a good reply. I was thinking port and polish.. Ok any more info or links

Any change to VE or compression ratio will upset the stock engine map. Just remember that a stock FI will always out perform stock carbs and be happy with that. If you want more power you need to re-map you engine + the stock system wont go over 6000RPM so counter weighted crank is a waste of time and money.

The counter weighted crank is never a waste of money for proper Balance!

Yup. My 71 Notch got a counter weighed crank, and that engine was really smooth. I loved it. And with the FI, it was a joy to drive. There's nothing wrong with doing it, other than the extra expense.

yeh fair play ill cop that, but I was talking about performance + the stock cranck is a tough old thing so long as you dont rev it too hard

Food for thought. Think I might just freshen with a top end rebuild kit. Check everything once apart. Thanks

We're lucky enough to have Jose at DPR Machine who rebuilds OE German cranks into counter-weighted balanced cranks. The only way to win at the iron triangle- they are fast, reliable, and cheap! :D

+1 DRP are the best for VW cranks .

It's gonna happen Vlad - but right now I just need it to run for 12 months before spending the big bucks

lol can't believe i am about to say this..... band aid it for now! after all its just a type 1 engine

You won't regret the alternative engines :) we are talking about conversion yeah? I hope so.

Salty Mon Jul 02, 2012 4:09 am

What, macgyver?
Nah, I am a bit OCD about problems - rather fix it proper or get a good runner to change over. I'm prob going to stay type 1 - Penrose build
