My idle solenoid went south and I'm wondering if that happens with the older ones or if I'm just unlucky? It no longer pulls in.

Just like everything they wear out and die.

Clean the electrical connection, make sure you're getting 12v to it.

If it's still dead chop off the plunger and use that until you can get a new one.

That's what I figured. Well, I'm hopefully getting a new one today. I tested the old one several times with no luck.

Did you ground it while testing?

I had an issue with my engine not running off the idle jet after sitting a while. I tested it, in and out of the carb and it worked off the carb so I cleaned the orifice out and it's worked fine since.

Yes, i did. I grounded it to several clean spots with no luck. I just cut the plunger off since I needed the car to be drive-able quickly.

 With the plunger cut off just leave it in the carb and also remove the wire to the + side of the coil. Forget about buying a new cut off valve as it won't be needed.....less future headache.

+1, mine has been running this way for years. Never missed it.
