Usually these guys are rabid when it comes to VW busses (including telling one caller that she should wear "a football helmet and kneepads" when she drove it) but

segment 10

they get a little soft and glowy talking about Air Cooled Westy :D

J8,

I heard it a couple of weeks ago. This 40 something accountant lady wanted to have a life experience and buy a VW Westy to go for a 6 month or so trip up and down the west coast and occassionally into the desert. They told her to buy an air cooled bus and go for the total experience of having interesting things happen to her in interesting places, and that she would have better stories to tell if she were in a "loaf". They also suggested that she have someone look at the bus she wanted to buy who had been working on them for at least 10 years.

Boy is that true!

BTW there J8, I am also a geologist. I call it a license to be a tourist. Rock on!

I listened to the same program on NPR and they did in fact recommend the air cooled VW bus. He also said he saw some rusted up old bus running around town and felt like going out and getting one himself.

It was a pretty cool segment. I felt it cool enough to list here, because they're usually really grumpy about the busses on the safety end of things...

but who can resist the classic bus? maybe it is just bus envy.

Randy, you're a geologist eh? I dated a hydrogeologist once, and learned more about this planet than any class coulda taught me. Where do you work outside of Maine? Have you done any media? As a new media chick I'm always wondering if people publish their work - are you a confidential contractor or do you publish reports for general use?

Hey, me too. I love that show. This week they actually recommended a new bug for somebody! Something must be up.

Nice Ride Alaska Westy, there is a archive of sorts that does have some other vw stories but I did not see a bus story.
