I am in desperate need of a measurement for my 003 transmission.
My bus has been off the road for too long (years)
I need the measurement for the the depth of the O ring for the governor shaft seal.
PLEASE help. Even if someone can take the governor cap off theirs and measure the depth that would be great. Factory spec would be better but I ma desperate.
Thanks |

You might want to post in the bay forum for that, nice to see you are working to get it back on the road though.
Did you put the camper special in it yet? |

| I believe it is the same all through the bay and Vanagon years even though other tranny parts are not always interchangeable. |

There is VERY little on the bay forum in regards to the 003 transmission.
I have the camper special in, had the transmission rebuilt too, but right away I got transfer of fluid between final drive and trans. I have not even had a chance to drive the darn bus with the camper special. I had a lot of delays on the project due to "life" but I am hopeful to get moving.
I just need to source a new seal and the proper depth, everything I hear is the depth is crucial on this seal.

Are you talking depth of the cavity or size of the O ring?
Measure the cavity depth and dia. and go to the many O ring application design charts linked to on Google. Pick the one based on the application and dimensions. |

| When you said O-ring I assumed you were talking the o-ring for the governor cover. On rereading you posts it sounds more like you are talking the seal that fits the governor shaft. If you are getting fluid transfer between the two halve it could be from any of several seals. The small seal for the governor shaft can be accessed with the transmission installed, the others can not. |

depth of the o ring installed. I have the old o ring out of a spare transmission that I have. Stupidly I did not measure first. I do not think the one I have in the bus now was installed right, so I don't want to trust that measurement

from what I read in the Bentley this is the seal that causes my symptoms. I am hoping, praying etc that this is the problem.
the transmission was rebuilt and after the first time it leaked I brought it back. They seperated the two and resealed and SAME prob so I am pretty hopeful this is it. |

It is #7 in this photo that I am referring to, not sure if that is the one from Scott. Hopefully he sees this and can answer |

| Yes, I believe that is the same seal. See fig 11-1 in the Bentley Automatic section, item 14. If I remember correctly, it just taps into the Final Drive housing flush, with the seal lip towards the governor. Lubricate it and slide the governor shaft home. |

The seal needs to be installed deep enough that the snout on the governor has about 1/8" of clearance.
Did the shop that did the reseal on your tranny do the pinion seal that is hidden deep inside? It is not obvious that it is there unless you are familiar with these boxes. One has to pretty much disassemble the complete final drive section to access it. |

I am not sure. To be honest I doubt it. They did a good job and I trust them, but I don't think they know much about VWs.
I am going to try the "easy" to access seal and hope that fixes it |
