View original topic: Noise coming from camper top

I have a 69 Bus and the camper top sounds like it is slamming on the roof when I am driving down the road. It sounds like the camper top is going to break or something when a tractor trailer goes by or if the wind is blowing hard. I changed the rubber seal that goes around the entire camper top but that did not solve the problem. Another thing I should mention is that the camper canvas has rotted off and is not there anymore. I want to change that but it was missing when I bought it and I have no clue what I need to buy/get, besides the canvas itself. This is my first bus so I have no idea how to even install this or what I need to do to fix the slamming noise of the camper top. Thanks for any help.

You didnt mention if you checked all the hardware including the brackets that hold the front luggage parts on. Is it all tight? Airs getting in there somehow and rattling it.

This works very well with a ratchet strap and gutter hooks. Don't break a window throwing the hook over the top or pull off the gutters with the ratchet,

A replacement for the rear poptop larch

Boat fittings and nylon strap for the side poptop latches.

Assuming you have the rubber hold-down straps installed and they are not cracked/weakened, you may have a problem with the front hinges.

IIRC, there were two types of front hinges, one made with tubular legs and the other with flat-bar legs. I had an early camper that had the tubular legs and the point where the two legs crossed and formed an "X" had worn at the spot where the legs were joined by a pin (rivet?) resulting in a lot of play in the hinge when it was folded down--I could actually lift the front lip of the pop top bit when it was folded down and secured. When driving, I experienced the exact same banging as you describe which was a result of wind getting under the front lip, lifting the top slightly, and then banging down again.

My solution was to replace the hinge with the flat-bar leg type that had no play at the "X". No problems after that. You could solve the problem by securing the front of the top with straps, as suggested.

I do have the interior latch, 3 of them. Its just the front part that its is slamming. Do I need to replace those 2 big rubber things that are attached to the cab roof

Pics would be a good help here. Are they stretched out and old?
