Ok guys so I've had my front end redone and put a new engine in it (new to me but has been gone thru) started it sounds great but it will not ho into gear only grinds it will go into gear with it off tho and my clutch pedal and cylinder appear to be working fine what could this be?

Does your Bordon tube have enough sag in it? How much freeplay do you have in your clutch pedal? Does your trans have oil in it? Who was the 3rd President of the United States?

It's simple, the clutch is not releasing. Did it work correctly with the previous engine? Are you running a hydraulic clutch? Are you running the correct throwout bearing/pressure plate combination?

Yes it did work fine in the previous engine, I am running a hydraulic clutch, and I have no idea if I'm running the correct combo how would I know?
Thanks

by the way I just put transmission fluid in and I dont really have any play in the clutch pedal

DarthWeber Sun Jul 08, 2012 4:11 pm

You should be able to depress the clutch pedal 3/8" - 3/4" before resistance is felt. If you have no freeplay you need to adjust the cable at the transmission.

Let me guess: you got a new clutch with the engine? And it had the early style ring on the fingers of the diaphram? And you have a late style throwout bearing on your trans? That will do it...

RDAY Sun Jul 08, 2012 4:18 pm

myold engine was ur standard stock 1600dp so im sure it had just a regular standard early stle clutch and throw out bearing right??

heres a pic of the new engines what do u think this is? can I just order the throw out barring for it by itself?

OLD VW NUT Sun Jul 08, 2012 4:43 pm

You'll need to post a picture of the throwout bearing too - that is a late model pressure plate. What year is the car?

Looks like you are missing a spring on the pressure plate ?

RDAY Sun Jul 08, 2012 5:30 pm

Its on a rail so a mixture of yrs lol but mostly all the parts are from a 1970 so I imagine the initial engine had an early so I guess I'll need to order the late throw out bearing
And ya ik the clip will be here tomoro that wouldn't have anything to do with it right?

the2ndcashboy Sun Jul 08, 2012 5:56 pm

You can't just put a late bearing on an early trans. The late trans has a "snout" that helps guide the bearing. The cross-shaft is different too. Its possible to convert to a later style T/O bearing, but would be easier and cheaper to just get the right pressure plate.

If you want to put an early TO bearing un a late case, all you have to do is remove the 3 nuts that hold the snout on and remove the snout. Done it many times.

You may need to bleed the hydraulic clutch. If you have no free play in the pedal and the throwout bearing/pressure plate combo is correct, the clutch should be releasing with no problem. If it is not releasing, the slave cylinder isn't moving far enough.

Most important, who really was the third president? And who really did shoot JR? And why does a posi work?..... These are the real questions..................

DarthWeber Sun Jul 08, 2012 7:36 pm

mark tucker Sun Jul 08, 2012 8:39 pm

a posie works because it isant wore the effuk out. the third president was the one after the 2nd one (tj) and befor the 4th one.(hint he had a weird family with a hand for a kuzzen & a bald uncle, the son was named after the family dog in the freezzer, a pug .and the daughter was named for the day she was conceved(tuesday). And finaly JR was playing with his pisstool & shot him self witch got him into a stickey situation.

One is not related to the other as long as the transaxle wasn't dry to begin with.
