My 71 sb would shake and hop, about 50% of the time on take off.I put a front transmisson mount in from under the car without removing engine etc. I have not tightened anything back up yet , Because The two 27mm fork horn bolts located at bottom of the car will not go back in..I can't get them started..
I search for info
It has been a few days now of trying over and over to get these 2 fork horn bolts started.
Any advise appreciated, Jack

| First - don't force them in. I had the same problem. I think the PO had forced them. I cleaned the bolt threads with a wire brush on a wheel and the interior threads with WD40 and the wire brush that a plumber uses to clean copper fittings. I cut the handle off and used my battery drill. The bolt would only go a short way. I would take it out and reclean the threads. It took several passes, but it is finally in. Next time, I will spend the money and buy a proper size tap from McMaster-Carr |

I assume that you are using a jack to support the transmission to help line stuff up PERFECTLY. Because you must get these threaded in a few turns by hand, cross threading will really ruin your week.
Some like to slowly turn such bolts by hand the opposite way slowly, until they feel a "drop", then start turning clockwise. |

MAKE SURE you have the gearbox lifted an inch or so off the frame with a floor jack.
You will need to maneuver it around fractions of an inch to get the bolts lined up right. Took me 5 minutes the other day when replacing my gearbox for the first time. Just need to eyeball the holes and line them up. |

18mm 1.5 pitch (what do your calipers say,, 18mm? )
tap in my hand
i had to chase mine due to PO not ever tightening them to 160ft/lbs.
you can loosen up all the bolts if the engine is out. so all parts rattle
and get those 2 in first.
there are 4 outboard rear tranny mounts nuts. loosen them
and the whole bracket floats. just loose.
now there is no side interference on these huge bolts.
if you need a source for that tap, ask,, lots of sellers... |
