i have a early 60's california fiberglass dune buggy with a 356 mounted. There are no numbers on the exposed case or on the generator stack. Is there any way possible to determine a possible model or year without removal of engine or buggy body.? Has Solex carbs with what I am assumig is aftermrket chrome tin and oil filter canister :?: etc. any help appreciated.. thanks ...Bill

Bill, a number should be visible between the fan belt at the base of the generator stand, on the timing cover/third piece. Should have a P-star-XXXXXX-star (usually) there may be a "KD" prefix, maybe nothing if it's replacement case, timing cover..or ground off.....'Back in the day' the most common reason for a 356 to disappear was so the motor could go into a..........jus' sayin'

Once or if found, the number can be posted and someone can check against easily available data to see what that engine's origin was prior to the chrome.

try to look behind fan housing at split in case(mirror?) there will be an id # like 616/**,that should tell you something!
