Folks,
I'm working my way throught the rebuild of my 1600, and I have a thermo question...I went ahead and bought a new therm from Bugworks, and it doesn't look like the old bellows type. I called them and they said that the bellows type isn't made anymore, and that the one they sent would work fine...problem is, it seems that this new-fangled one will spin in the bracket, as the top won't secure it in place like the bellows type. Anyone else run in to this situation with an after-market thermo? Any ideas (besides not putting it in - too cold here)?
Thanks!

I am in the process of setting up a new engine for my Squareback, and had to come up with all the thermostate hardware. I ordered a new thermostate from Mountinworks in Colorado, and what I received was made in Brazil, and does not look like the older bellows-style. The thermostate mounts in the bracket and there should be a small tang on the bottom of the thermostate the will lock into place when the thermostat is tightened up with the nut on the bottom. I will check the part number for mine at home tonight, but it bolted in fine, although I still have to hook up all the rest of the hardware on top.

The Brazilian thermostat I got from Rocky Mountain Motorworks; their part number was 111-119-159A (65-70 deg C). It is a Thomson product 040-119-159.1. You can check out the installation on my web page below. The tang mounts on the rear of the bracket (relative to the engine).

As for not running a thermostate, my only experience has been with a WC engine on our minivan. I noticed that the temp gauge stayed low, and would really drop when doing down hills. It was also evident in a very noticable drop in the gas mileage. The engine is designed to run in a specific temp range; colder or hotter should be avoided.
