Mecum Auctions:

1953 Cab:

HIGHLIGHTS

- Originally a California car
- Rare one-year-only "bent window" model 356
- 1 of 394 built
- "USA de Luxe Edition" featuring leather seats
- Correct 2-piece crankcase with 528 cast number
- Correct Solex PBIC 40 carburetors

- Complete restoration by Auto Collectors Garage in 2010 & 2011 with receipts & photo documentation

DESCRIPTION
Only 394 Porsche cabriolets were built in 1953, many of which, including this particularly rare example, were imported to California. Notable for its one-piece “bent” windshield that appeared only in 1953 between the “split window” early versions and the curved glass used from 1954 onward, this 356 is made yet more unique by virtue of its “USA de Luxe Edition” designation and optional 1500S engine, which produced 72 HP at 5000 RPM versus the base engine’s 44 HP - a huge increase by contemporaneous standards.

A “barn find” discovered in Southern California in 2008, the car was found with its original engine and drivetrain, first confirmed by the early California state title referring to the engine number rather than the chassis. It is presently undergoing a fully documented nut-and-bolt restoration by the renowned Auto Collectors Garage in Houston, Texas, whose restorations have won awards at some of the world’s most prestigious events and Concours d’Elegance, including Keels and Wheels, Meadow Brook and Amelia Island. In accordance with its Porsche factory Heritage reports, it will be finished in correct Light Grey with Red leather upholstery and carpeting and Black cloth soft top.

The rarity of this car cannot be overstated; in fact, the restorer states that it is one of only two he has discovered in at least fifteen years.

Full documentation will be provided for this rarest of early 356 imports, including the aforementioned Heritage report, license receipts from 1970 to 2000 and a detailed photographic record of the entire restoration.

DESCRIPTION
Completed on August 6th 1963 and possibly shown by Porsche at the September 12th 1963 Frankfurt Auto Show, this 356SC cabriolet is a unique early production prototype incorporating several evolutionary design changes planned for 1964 production. In addition to its special order Silver Metallic paint and Bright Red leather interior, the car is configured with almost every factory option planned for 1964 as well as a number of features that were considered but never used in regular production models.

An extremely detailed and correct nut-and-bolt restoration intended for Concours-level competition, the car features the 1964-specification 1,600cc flat four SC engine and four wheel disc brakes, and retains all five original dated chrome wheels, chrome luggage rack, fog lamps, fresh air blower, balance spring, radio, speakers and antenna, all authenticated by the accompanying Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.

For 1963 C models Porsche offered two different engine designs with new designated crankcase numbers. This car’s code 616/16 crankcase connotes its SC designation. The engine has been completely rebuilt with proper SC parts and correctly finished to a high level of detail. The unique fan shroud is a factory experimental unit that routes ignition and electrical wiring through conduits in the sheet metal rather than the external routing eventually retained for production, and an auxiliary power supply receptacle provides power for an optional metal flexible service lamp. This car also features the first of the louvered deck lids designed to increase ventilation.

Four-wheel disc brakes were another new feature for 1964 models. This car’s 356C calipers were rebuilt and plated gold, and the rotors were left primed, just as they were delivered new to prevent rust. The backing plates and axle shafts were detailed and powder coated with a 70% vintage lacquered appearance finish, all new Koni shocks were installed, king pins and steering link were rebuilt and the front steering dampener replaced. All five correctly-dated steel wheels were split in two, individually chromed and welded together again to precision factory quality, and feature new-for-1964 flat hubcaps devoid of the factory insignia.

The accident-free body was stripped to bare metal and refinished in the correct special-order Silver Metallic, its relatively flat finish replicating that applied by the factory, with superb fit and finish to match. A washable spray undercoating also replicates the factory finish, and all correct sound deadener materials were used in conjunction with the original fasteners.

Many interior design changes were considered for 1964. The redesigned dash incorporates new switches, new glove box location and an interim waterfall design with new radio and ashtray location, all fixed rather than removable as in previous designs. The interior is also a case study in excellence and attention to detail, featuring all new materials including leather upholstery, leather-bound carpets and restored and rechromed hardware throughout. Beneath the new convertible top, the frame was restored with NOS wood bows repainted the proper Beige and installed with correct bolts, latches and brackets. All glass is factory correct as well, with the original Sigla windshield and Durvit door and vent windows. Expert chroming has rendered manufacturer markings, numbers and insignias as legible as new.

The completed car boasts matching numbers throughout, the hood, doors, deck lid, jamb plates, instruments, seats, wheels, fuel sending unit, soft top, motor and transmission all either matching the chassis number or factory date coded correct. The overall quality of the restoration is magnified in the smallest details: all correct materials, fasteners, finishes, labels and markings, even the original dated owner’s

WOW, lotsa cool stuff! Pretty amazing that a Pre-A Speedster with racing provenance would still have its original engine and trans!

Disappointing that in the description of the '53 Cab they'd claim the bent-window was a 1 year only feature, LOL.

I love the "57" coupe with wide whites and "quad" taillights. I wonder if the sunroof is original to the car. It seems there were a lot of sunroofs in '57.
