Folks,
Don't let this happen to you - I had the boys (local VW place that seemed to know what they were doing) port my case during rebuild for a full-flow oil filter...new pump, modified pump cover, ported case on the front, etc. Guess what happened when I tried to put on the fan housing after installing the pump? Yep, no clearance for the hose fittings or the pump case...so, back in went the old pump, and now I have a nice hole to plug on the front of the case. Long and short of it - make sure that your mechanic knows that your Type III engine case can't be treated like a Type I case, at least when it cames to full-flow...
Anyone else have a horror story about the prejudice that mechanics show towards Type I's? |

| Have you seen www.bert3.be he has as section in pretty good detail on how to do a full flow system. maybe show it to your mechanic? |

| Yep - even pointed out that the fan would need the clearance..."No problem; we've done this a bunch of times..." The prejudice I refer to is the tendency to think like a Type I mechanic (no fan in front, dog house in back, etc.), vice being able to visualize what it is the customer is talking about. My bust of course, but it still bugs me to have spent over $100 on a system I can't use and can't return...can't even make the mods that are refered to above, as the pump cover juts out too far. Ah, well...another lesson in life. |

| were you trying to use a heavy duty oil pump? a stock size pump will provide enough oil pressure for a full flow system and you will get more clearance. maybe try that and find a lower profile pump cover. |

I don't understand what you mean?
If you use a serise of 90 degree fittings you can plumb the oil away from behind the fan.
BerT3 didn't need to clearece his fan but I had to gently grind away some of the fan material to get mine to fit nicely.
It seems like the mechanic had done a bunch for T3 beofre but you haven't understood how to get it all to fit.
I've got some photos of my case at http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/wbarratt
Cheers,
