View original topic: Back tires rub.... need help!
ho_mgnt Mon Sep 22, 2003 11:29 am

Hey folks,

I have a 65 Notch running 5 spokes w/ 165's in the rear. The tires rub like crazy, and I still want to lower the back to even it up with the front.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

I went with 145's in the rear.

They do not rub, but they have no mass to them.

I tried the Empi 5-1/2" EMPI 5 Spokes too, No luck. I had to go to 5" BRM's

Use axle's and tubes from a 65' and earlier bug or the whole tranny. It's a little narrower.

when i put my new wheels and tires on, i had to roll up the lip on the fender, inside the wheel well. they where just barley rubbing, but mostly on the sidewall, and now i got about an inch. that might help, depending on the offset of your wheels.

can you tell when you roll up the fenders?

Is your notch lowered at all in the back or is it stock height? Im wondering because I just lowered my notch 2 notches in the back and with 5 spokes I fit 205x65 in the back and 195x45 up front. This was with the stock long axle trans. It does barely rub on the lip when I hit a bump though.

did you just use like a baseball bat to roll the lip or what? because mine barely rub on the rear also and i might do this too.

I heard about using bug axels.... can I still keep the type 3 drums? Aren't type 3 drums bigger/better?

Hello,

It's all in the offset of the wheels. I can get the arches OVER the rim itself with a 5.5" wheel (offset op ET 27mm) and 195/65 tires in the back.

More info on my website: www.BerT3.be

I have seen 16" 7" wide wheels on a T3.

ho_mgnt: You can keep your stock drums. They are better because they are bigger.

hey berT3 would you consider selling a copy of the air set up you have? also do you know if 15x7 will fit in the front of a 72?

when i rolled the lip of the fender, i just used a block of wood to keep the outside smooth and a pair of channel locks. granted my car is just painted flat black right now, and i don't know if you want to do this if you have a nice paint job. but i used the pliers to bend up the lip, then laid the block of wood on the outer fender, and used channel locks to crimp the lip flat.

Hello,

72sQuarey: Circumscription of Angelo Amato's T3 (UK)

Quote: Type 3 Fastback on 7.5x17's 205/40's under stock arches YES. 944 front sway bar and revcounter, bugpack rear sway bar. VR6 corrado seats. Audi coupe front calipers. Motor soon (Wasserboxer/Type4 ? ) & rear discs with Golf 4 calipers hehe

Proof it's possible !

I will have some setups for sale in the near future. Don't expect it to be cheap though.

Please tell me how you rolled up the lip on the fender. My front tires rub on turns, slightly, and I do not want to raise the front end. Rolling might be the trick.

Yes, you can still use your type3 drums. However, you'll need to machine 9/16ths of an inch of the end so the nut will grab the threads. Yes, type3 drums are bigger and better. :D

it is all about wheel offset. the fake empi 5 and 8 spokes are a bug offset and they do not 'tuck' any 914 wheel will fit great. must 7" wide fwd drive wheels fit too...but you have to redrill.

what's the widest tire I can get on a stock rim? i'm wondering if I will have to get another set to widen the rear for 195's... anybody know where to get 1/4" whitewall tires... manufacturer, etc? thanks.

Aloha, you can get a copy of VW Trends magazine 05-03 issue. It had a really good article regarding a new trans for a Type 3 Squareback. It documents the use of shorter early Type 1 (bug) axles which tucks the rear tires nicely under the fenders. I plan on doing something similiar since my trans is original an needs to be updated. Hope this helps.
