I am rebuilding a 52 MG kit car that has a type 3 automatic transmission. I have replaced all the seals and have it back on the car. However, for my maiden voyage around the block I could not get it to go into reverse.
I understand that if it will not go into reverse and 3rd gear that it is likely the direct/reverse clutch drive is bad. But the car is not built to a point where I can drive it to see if 3rd gear works.
Is there any initial diagnostics or process of elimination I can follow before I pull the tranny back out and start rebuilding it ....AGAIN? |

| I did not make any adjustments to the bands nor did I break down the gears. I simply replaced seals and gaskets, cleaned it up and put it back together. |

| Are you pulling up on the shifter handle, when shifting to reverse & park newbie? |

So, to clarify, I can move the shift lever into the reverse position and all other gears.
My problem is that when the shift lever is in the reverse position the transmission will not engage. |

| So....no other ideas? I guess I'll have to remove the tranny, tear it down, and replace the direct/reverse clutch. sigh! |

| Are you using Chapter 8 in the brown Bentley Type 3 Manual to troubleshoot/rebuild it? That is all we have/need to fix them. |
