i don't think he means at idle...

if you have a tach I would keep it between 2,000 and 4,000 ( 4,500 absolute max) in 4th gear on the open road... (40mph to 75 mph or whenever it tops out at about 4,000 rpm)

If you follow the link in my last post you'll see that the rev limiting rotor for a 1600 is set to 4500rpm.

What's safe depends on how lean you are running. If you severly lean out at 3,500 rpm then that's the limit. Of course, you should verify this by checking the exhaust with a gas analyzer.

Personally, when my vacuum is good I tend rev it no more in 1st than when it feels like torque has maxed out. Then, I use that rpm value as a guide for 4th.
