My 68 Ghia came with an engine that has a B6 (B6300760) which my research shows was a 1970 1600 single port dual relief. It does have dual port heads on it though, so I'm not sure what's been done to it. The car was "restored" and I use that term loosely in the early 1980's, and has been sitting for the past 15 years. I got it running, and although I hear some valve clatter and it makes a little blue smoke (sticky rings?) I don't hear and serious knocks or rattles.
Would the B6 be a good foundation to build? Or should I scrap it and get one of those new Brazilian cases?
I have read that the first step in building a VW engine is "get a new case" |

| You'll get lots of back and forth on this, and while it's always nicer to do a build (especially a high hp stroker) with a new case, lots of motors get built with used cases and they work out fine. If you have the budget and can justify it, use a new case. If I was building stock or near stock and I had a good used case, I would use it. For something bigger and higher performance, I would be more critical of that 40 year old hunk of magnesium that actually wasn't designed as a rebuildable part. |
