If someone tells you they have an early 60s squareback and "only 5 were imported into the US, my grandpa brought it over from germany"
What year would you think that was? Or is that even legit/ does it make sense? am looking for info
Thanks

61 is the first year of the Variant.

How can you confirm the real number imported?

Private party? I would lean towards bogus. I would guess that many , many more were imported.

Ask Everett . He is the real expert. I would beleive what he says.

Good luck. If the car is in good shape, buy it anyways. Early Type 3's are not common.

Damn. If only five were brought in from Germany, my grandparents must have brought at least six of the five in! BUT- '67 is right- the early ones are the scarcest and most beautiful. If YOU like the car, and YOU like the price, then- and ONLY then, is it worth it.

Look in the T3 For Sale section. If only 5 Squares were "imported" where did the rest come from? How did they get here? They most certainly were not built in the US.

Sounds like bunk to me. Trying to jack the price, maybe?

like alot of euro spec VW's alot of them came over from folks stationed in the military. I noticed this about bugs. Wherever there is a town that has some type of air force base or any other military base nearby, the wrecking yards ended up with alot of european model VW's. My brother bought his car while stationed over there, got sent to a base in Phoenix, sold his car to someone local and now his european model car is cruising around Phoenix. Thats why I noticed alot of Notchbacks and semaphore model bugs around military cities.

Since VW didn't market the T3 to the US, ALL of them are "imported", usually by a private party.

so are you saying that every squareback and fastback was imported by a private party?
I know notches and type 3 ghias were european market only but they did sell the square and fast back here at the VW dealerships.

that info is correct untill 66.

in 66 they started selling them, but pre 65, they are all grey area cars, mostly euro spec, I'm sure a ton from canada got in, I heard here in sacramento, the dealer would help you get one from canada if you really wanted one. the canada ones should all have gas heaters btw. You can find out a ton of more info at http://www.vwtype3.org/

While out today I stopped by a guys house with some buses out front. He had an old deluxe so I thought he might have some parts up for grabs. After talking with this guy I noticed a really old Type 3 in the back of his yard. We took a look at it and he told me it was a '62 that was brought over from Germany on the "grey-market". Its sitting under the North Carolina pine trees rusting (rotting) into nothing but its mostly there except the engine.

Did I mention this Type 3 was 5 miles from Cherry Point Naval Air Station?

If someone said that to me, I would think they were crazy. It makes no sense. I would ask for proof.
