View original topic: Towing a '78?

I think I've found a wonderful '78 camper, but if I buy her she'll need towed about 700 miles. Uhaul's website said my '94 V6 S10 Blazier isn't heavy enough to tow a '78 "transporter camper". I have a tow hitch on the Blazier, but never used it.. I'm assuming its part of the standard tow package that was available from the dealer.

If I can't tow this thing myself, I'm going to have to pass -- and I really don't want to do that, this bus is calling my name!!!!

Anyone have any experience with this type of thing?? I did a search and came up with nothing... Any suggestions? Hints? I don't have a lot of cash so I can't have it delivered.

Worriedly :(

I know people that haul for different reasons, write off a trip etc...
Where are you hauling it from and to?

If you can't take it, is it for sale? To a good home?

It'd need to go from south of Sacramento, CA to Phoenix, AZ....

I know a guy that lives in Sacremento he travels for business to Nevada for sure, but not sure if he travels to Arizona. I will check it out.

Do you have a car dolly? Flat bed trailer? What to haul? When are looking at doing it? He owns a yukon.

Let me know what you are looking at doing.

2 Suggestions:

I had Dependable Auto Shippers bring my bus from Portland, OR to Boston for $1200. Key words are it has to run. You would be one oversize class. You can look them up on the web. YOu can get a quote over the website.

Go rent or borrow a pick up truck and car hauler from Ryder, or somebody like that. You might be able to rent a car dolly from U-haul also.

Check out going both ways or one way, it might be a lot cheaper. I rented a car hauler from u-haul for a week one way from Iowa to Maine for $300 to bring my John Deere to me.

If a bus can tow another bus your truck can certainly do it. However, A Class 2 hitch when you consider the weight of a tow dolly and the dolly capacity, you are about at the weight limit for a late bus.

I would probabably be ok with this tow setup as long as there where no steep downhill grades on the way. One of the main criteria for towing capacity is braking so if your cheating a little on tow capacity go easy on the brakes. The other big concern is suspention capability so try to keep the tong weight low with your rig. Also check the owners manual to see if and if so how much a vw campmobile is out of your towing capacity. Then decide for yourself. The VW campmobile unladen weight for 76'(I just happen to have an owners manual sitting in front of me) is 3,296lbs.
Oh. If you happen to get stopped by the police towing more than your rated capacity you may find there are other potential problems with exeeding your tow capacity.

Having towed my buses a few too many times myself, I would assume if your S-10 is in decent mechanical condition, it will at least move the bus at lower speeds. I've towed a bus behind my 92 Jeep Cherokee on a few occasions, and was able to maintain about 50-60 mph without overheating. If you decide to do it, by all means use one of those auto-transport trailers that takes all 4 wheels off the ground. The wind resistance on a bus will send it all over the place if a semi whips by you going too fast, and the tow dolly makes this MUCH worse...
