| Been reading here for about a year but never posted before. This site has been very helpful so here goes my first question. My girlfriend smoked the engine compartment wireing harness on her 79 Westy with FI. Got a harness from a wrecking yard for 20 bucks. Cant figure out which fuel injector wiring plug goes where? I can figure out the right and left side, that's easy, have been told the injectors fire off in paired sequence (1 and 4, 2 and 3 or something?). No markings on any of the wires to distinguish them from each other. What is the scoop on this? Any help would be appreciated, no knowledgeable mechanics to be found nearby. Thanks... |

Just run them to the injector the wire seems to reach best. This fuel injection actually fires all 4 injectors at the same time so it does'nt matter wich goes where. I hope you got your harness out of a 79 bus or maybe 80-early83 vanagon as they made some changes in 79.
The earlier D-jetronic fuel injection fires 2 cyliders at once. This is common knowledge to a-lot of volkswagen people who get it confused with your L-jetronic or afc injection. D-jetronic was used on vw type 3's, 4's porsche914's volvo's and mercedes benz among others. |

| Thanks josh. the wrecking yard guy "said" it was out of a 79. I'll try it and see how it goes... |

Bob, there's a pretty dense but informative book on the Bosch fuel injection system available...I found mine in Books-A-Million right next to the Bentley manual, so I guess it's widely available.
Might help to give it a once over (it helped me when I switched over to FI) |

GoldenBob,
Look at the 79 wiring diagram as it shows which connectors on the ECU lead to which injectors. It's true they all fire up at once but why not figure out where they are intended to go using a continuity tester or ohm meter.
There are 4 harnesses:
- 75 - 76 (VIN 2262077583) with throttle switch (includes 74 CA automatic)
- 76 only (from VIN 2262077584) with microswitch
- 77 - 78 harness
- 79 harness
The 79 harness can be identified by noticing it has no connector for the series resistors because it's built into the harness. |

| Thanks for all the info...You guys are better than all the repair shops in this little valley in Southern Oregon!!! Speaking of wireing diagrams and books...which books/diagrams are you refering to (my girlfriend has the "green" book)? |

I think he's referring to the Probst book. It's very good explanation of all the Bosch system but the L-Jetronic diagnositic information within it can be found on the web for free:
