Another OG Hurst guy here. I really like the wood knob on yours.
Although, the stock shifter in my 63 is awesome as well, even more noteworthy given that it is fairly tall. A flick of the wrist is all it takes. But the transmission, shift coupler, shift rod bushing and clutch adjustment are all perfect in that car. One should always address those things first.

my real Hurst is also a very good shifter... highly recommended
do not buy the empi knockoff.. get the real deal.. i have had both and yes there really is a noticeable difference |

i have the empi. it shifts great to me. super smooth.
smooth shifting is more about the bushing and shift coupler than it is about the shifter you use.
