Does anyone know the length of the Type-3 Automatic Short Axles? As I understand it, the Type-3 Automatic has two different length axles. This is due to the offset of the trans. What is the length of the short one?

I'm pretty sure they are the same as a standard trans. I never heard of that one before? :?

If I remember right the right axle is shorter by 50mm than the left AT axle. These right axles are 26mm shorter than the standard MT axle. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies guys. I am still a little confused though. I am new to the vw world and still learning.... so to get the length of the T-3 automatic short axle I subtract 26mm from the standard T-3 manual trans axle, right? IF so, what is the length of the standard T-3 manual trans axle? How is this length different from the standard T-1 axle? The reason I am searching for the information is that I am custom restoring a 71' Karman Ghia Convertible. I want to replace the stock diagonal arm with a 1.5" narrowed diagonal arm from aircooled.net so that I can fit wide tires and wheels without having to flare out the fenders. Aircooled.net has told me that the short axle from an automatic T-3 will work perfectly with the narrowed diagonal arm. I want to use HD axles from Sway-A-Way, and they want me to supply them with the exact length. If they don't carry this length in stock, I may have to order a slightly longer one and shorten it myself. Thank you for your help.

Ok, a manual trans type3 axle has a total length of 415.5mm (16.357"), and is the same as a bug axle. They will interchange with each other. I understand what you're doing, and it will help you get all the clearance you might need. I hope the measurements help.

I talked to Sway-A-Way, and for me to get an axle 389.5mm (15.33", I would probably do 15.25") in length, it would have to be custom made. They could do it, they just don't carry this length in stock. Thank you very much for your help, it is much appreciated. - Tony
