When I bought my '76 Westy, it came with a new bumper. The bumper was primed and still in the package (green bag). I think the package even had '76 written on the outside.
I painted the bumper up real nice and pretty like, but when I went to put it on, the holes wouldn't line up. Should I drill new holes in my bumper brackets? Why wouldn't it fit?
Anyone want to buy it? lol, stupid thing. I ended up putting my old one back on. I'd rather have the new one on though. |

| That's a big deviation. I thought the bumpers from 73 to 79 were the same. Maybe you have one that was made in Brazil or Mexico. I don't know if they're any different, but I'm sure someone here will. |

It is no surprise that you discovered misalignment, the replacement bumpers have a reputation for sloppy tolerances. I recommend that you remove the brackets from the frame, install the brackets loosely to the bumper itself then re-install brackets to frame. There are two what 17mm? 19mm? bolts per side where they bolt up. You have a much better chance of wrestling the dang thing onto the frame than you do fighting the brackets onto the bumper, particularly if you have a nice paint job. My old bumper was clanged-in pretty good, with lots o'distortion to make my alignment job more challenging. A pipe wrench on the brackets can help you align those bolts to the frame, and no one will notice the teeth marks down there. Touch up the brackets when done.

| In case anyone is looking for the bolts, the socket size is 17mm. The bolts are Mx10x1.5 and 22mm long. |
