ok, I have a 77 westy, she usually takes a couple of tries to start up on a normal day, but not today. She fired up once, then died (the usual) but instead of firing up the next time, it just made a buzzing noise. Of course, from back in the engine compartment. Is this a shot starter...an easy fix, cheap fix, or more complicated than that??

I know jack about starters by the way.

I'm supposed to go on a damn important trip on fri. morning, bright and early, so any quick advice would be hella appreciated.
thanks

the starters aren't too expensive and you can prolly do it yourself. not too hard to do on a bus. i suggest getting a chiltons or hanyes manual and going from there. a new starter wont be too bad...but im not sure if the prices are different if you have a syncro..or two wheel and what not
hope that helps

but does this sound like it is the problem, or am I going to be waisting my $time$...?

Before messing with your starter: How old is your battery? How much voltage is it putting out? Is it charging? You can get it tested at a parts store if you don't have a voltmeter.

Sounds like a bad connection from the battery to the starter rather than a bad starter. Take Pogolo's advice and check the battery. Take it to a parts store or just about any place that sells batteries. While there purchase a battery terminal cleaner which is a special type wire brush and clean the battery terminals and battery cable ends. If the ends are shot and can't be tightened with a wrench then consider replacing them. Also check and clean the wires attached to the starter. WD-40 works well to spray on and brush off for cleaning, but most autoparts stores sell cleaners specifically for cleaning terminals and leads. Good luck.

wow..great...thanks for the advice, I'll try cleaning the terminals and checking connections tonight and see if I can get her back on the road.

You guys are giving me hope that I'll still be able to drie tomorrow. Thanks again.
