Hi,
I was wondering if you all could pass on a few suggestions for the best quality of an automotive grade paint in a can?

I have seen a few online, but I'm not sure which is best. Do you use one that requires a clear coat along with the base coat? Or, do you use a single stage and buff it out?

I am looking at doing a small bit of painting and I'm trying to avoid the cost of buying a sprayer at this time, as well as the cost of the paint for the small job that I am looking to complete. I will be using two different colors: A bright red and a bright white.

The 2 part ones are decent (they have the activator at the bottom, you break the seal and shake like mad). We have Dupont in a can available and it's good for smaller repairs.

Same for clear coat, they make a 2 part in a spray can. The tips are really really nice too and you can get it to lay down pretty flat.

They're really expensive up here, like $25/can so doing a car might not be too feasable. You can rent a booth up here as well, maybe look around for the same in your area??

Do you know if you can buy that online? I looked and I did not find it. I had heard you can have paint put in cans at a paint shop, but I had inquired at it was crazy money. I am not doing a whole car just a few small pieces.

I bought a can from http://www.towerpaint.com earlier this year.

I also bought a can form my local paint place.

The Towerpaint spray paint was nice and everything came out well.

The paint I got locally, they loaded it into the can, sucked.

As soon as pub draught Guiness came out I was like "why can't they do this with paint/activator??"

I got a can from paintscratch.com a few years ago - worked great.

Thanks for the link guys. Everett, do you know what type you used from Tower Paint? Did you use the one with the 2k, or did you use the acrylic lacquer and then also sprayed the clear over that?

I am leaning towards the 2k because they advertise it as being a more durable finish, but 'm trying to see what others like and what would work the best for a nice clean durable finish.

"Our Popular Acrylic Enamel Aerosol Spray Can"
I see this listed product on their site.

I just painted some small parts so I did not clear-coat it.

My son used Tower paint/clear lacquer on his Toyota for a nice match!

I recently just got a can filled with paint at my local paint store in Denver. I took in some left over PPG single stage that the car was painted with and asked them to put in a can do some small parts. In the end, the parts turned out OK, but the can was a mess. I swear it sprayed more paint around the garage than on the hinges I wwas painting (Thing). Not sure it was the can or the paint, but I wouldn't try to do anything where I needed any type of fine control. There wasn't so much a fine spray as geyser!

I'm not sure I'm the best person to ask what to use but:
I had an older can of etching primer from my local "real" auto paint store so I used that.

I want to clean up a small patch of rust hidden under the bumper and protect a fresh cut I made on the interior of my door under the panel. I've been to the paintscratch site GoWesty refers you too. Looks like a good product but does one really need all that? Is rust converter, primer, bas coat, clear coat necessary? It doesn't need to be professional, just protective. Rust-Oleum/Krylon and call it a day?
