View original topic: Windshield sealer...what to use
duckyman Sun Aug 10, 2003 6:16 pm

I am getting ready to replace a broken windshield in my '58 bus.
I have a new seal and good German glass, but I am unsure of
what to use between the body and seal , and glass and seal. I
have heard some say to use roofing tar, but that sounds messy.
I have used silicone in the past but I want to do it properly this
time. Thanks in advance...

There is paste for that. I in the past too have used Silicone, but I heard you can buy paste for windows to seals. Check it out - even at walmart...look on the back to see if it sticks to glass...If not, try rubber cement??? Just a thought...Good luck!

use door seal adhesive.. good seal but never dries... that way you can get them off when you need to.. and it cleans up with thinner.

You can also use what's called "flowable silicone". It's not that messy if you're careful with it and makes a good seal. It's also available at any auto parts store. It's designed specificaly for glass installation.

VW never used any sealer and either have we in 16 years of restorion VW'S. There is no need to use sealer..

you heard it from the souce, unless you have holes around your windshield your seal shouldent leak.

VW did in fact use sealant. And you are instructed to remove any leftover sealant when replacing the glass, at least according to the VW factory manuals. The sealant is only reffered to as "VW Window Cement D10". When replacing glass you are instructed to coat the entire outer circumfrence of the seal and also the lower corners of the window frame with it.

Although i dont use sealer either, seems to work fine without it (unless the vehicle is primer then water seems to "seep" thru under the seal).

Now if anyone can figure out what D10 is, well be that much more wiser =)

3M windo-weld. get the pump style top with the flat tip also. any parts store that sells 3M products should have the catalog.
