Folks,
Muir only has a static timing reference of 7.5 TDC for a 1600 cc 67 Fasty...anyone have a feel for the timing light reference, and whether the vacum hose needs to be plugged?
Thanks |

| Try to keep the total timing below 32 degrees. Is this a mechanical and vacumm advance distributor, or a vacumm only? Either way you want to keep the total below 32 degrees, and let the idle fall where it may. I hope this helps. |

The timing light reference?
I set mine to 7.5 BTDC with the vacuum hose hose disconnected. At least on my car, connecting or disconnecting the hose makes no difference at idle speeds. |

Now, here's the strange thing...when I use the static timing light, it seems perfect (light comes on just when distrib rotor lines up with notch in distrib, 7.5 BTDC lines up with split in crankcase), but when I slap on the timing light, timing mark is about 2 inches advanced (actually have to take off the fan belt cover to see it) at 700 rpm...thoughts?
Thanks, |

What's your idle set to?
Does it make a difference if you disconnect the hose?
I would trust the static timing setting in this case as it sounds like there might be some vacuum present that is advancing the timing. If this is true disconnecting the hose should affect the timing.
I'm assuming you have the stock distributor for a '67 which is 311 905 205G.
311 905 205F should work too, although that's a '66 single port dizzy. |

Thanks,
I had exactly the same problem with my 67. Static timed it to 7.5, started right up and purred (with vacuum line pluged). Connected the vacuum line and up goes the RPM and the timing goes off the scale. I tried re-syncing it, idling it down, but to no avail. The base plate, on the carb that supplies the vacuum for the dist., was flawed, allowing a vacuum signal at idle. This may not be your problem, but it would be worth checking out. When I took my carb apart and examined the baseplate, even with the throttle completely closed, the port for advance was exposed. I changed my baseplate out with a spare and the problem was solved. |

When you say "base plate," do you mean the gaskets under the intake manifolds? I used the stock metal gaskets out of the re-build kit, and I've since seen a couple of critical comments about these...any suggestions on a better fix?
Thanks |

Hey, interesting thing...did the same thing. Disconnected and plugged the vacumm line to the carb, and the idle and timing are right on with the timing light (700 rpm, 7.5 BTDC). Hooked up the line, and the idle is way up and the timing way advanced...so, is my timing off, or is my idle off, or is my base plate off? Inquiring minds want to know...OBTW, stock distributor and carbs...
Thanks, |

I know this is a very old thread but I'm having the same issue with my 205G and stock carbs. Timing at idle (~750) with carbs sync'ed and vac line off is at 7.5*. Connect vac line, timing advances slightly, about to 10*. Rev the engine, timing advances to ~ 32* but only cames back down once in a while. Most of the time it stays fully advanced. Throttle return springs are strong.
Any ideas? |

| You may have weak springs in the distributor. I ran into that on one a while back. I re tensioned the spring and all was good. |

How did you do that? |
