View original topic: type 3 seat bottoms

I just went to a salvage yard and stripped a pretty decent 63 squareback. I was removing the front seats and the driver side slid right out. The passenger was putting up a hell of a fight but a few kicks with my feet from behind and the help of a big broken tree branch, I got it to slide out. I wouldnt leave that yard without it.
My question is, how can I repair the metal skirt that surround the bottom where I dented it up. Can it be removed from the seat frame and repaired. I checked it out and it didnt seem like it would come off without cutting on something.
My second question is can I use a seat botton from a later highback and add the lowback top to the later seat base? Please let me know. Thanks.

First, where is there a '63 Squareback?!? Anything left?

Yes, the seat bottom comes apart, although I have never done it. I'm not sure how to get it apart but it's in my shop manuals.

I don't know if a lowback bottom will work with a highback seat base. Maybe not if it's really a '63 seat bottom. I think it depends on the year - there were some changes in the seats in the 70s.

Are the seats still black/white checker?

Yes to both questions. To get the seat apart, you'll need a small punch (about 1/8" diameter) to knock the roll pins out. Once these are out the plastic caps can come off, and with a little prying/spreading the back rest will come off. Then you turn the seat over and bend the metal tabs (about 1/2" wide steel flaps) back out of the way. Then you can remove the seat bottom from the base. Adjust the base with a hammer and dolly (or whatever you have available) and reassemble with your "new parts". I hope this helps.

Body panels, rear hatch etc. I took the column, windshield, mirror, visors, 1 door, handles, push button assembly, rear view mirrow, ashtrays, domelight, shifter, steering wheel and some other little stuff.

The rear seat is still there, checker pattern if Im correct.
