Folks,
If you've followed my trials and tribulations, you know that I have been rebuilding a 1967 Fasty that was shut down and stored in a barn since 1979. After 3 months of hard labor and $2000 of parts, I've got a rebuilt 1600 that purrs like a kitten, and should be able to bring it down off blocks soon. One of my last jobs is brakes, and I've replaced hoses, brake cylinders, drums, rotors, calipers...you name it. The one item that I haven't replaced is the master cylinder, 'cause no one seems to have the right one (all seem to have too many ports and too small outer diameter for the push rod end). I was able to score a rebuild kit for the master cylinder, but Muir seems very emphatic about not doing a rebuild on your own. Unfortunately, out here in the land-of-corn-and-no-ACVWs, there isn't a Clint Muldoon who can do the job for me. So, to make a long story short...any tips before I venture into this new territory?
Thanks,

At first I thought you were asking about rebuilding the calipers, now that is something I haven't done yet.
Contact Jim Adney at www.vwtype3.org and ask him if he has any tips on doing it. I know he prefers to rebuild them himself. He might even give you a price on rebuilding it. He also recommends doing the silicone brake fluid conversion since everything is now new. This way you won't have to do anything to the brakes for years. I've done them before, and the cups seem the hardest to do. VW used tapered cones to assist in installation, and non of the rebuild kits have them. Since you already have it apart, you might be able to get a machinist to make one up for your size. I hope this helps.
