What do you think should be needed to convert a '71 super beetle into a rat rod? I will definitely be shaving most of the stuff, with the exception of the door handles, cause I don't like having to rely on electricity to open my doors. I also want to keep to solid top. I am painting it flat grey, smoothing out the dash, and altogether making it look smoother. but what about fender skirts, yay or nay? different rear brake lights/ turn signals? replacement for the front turn signals? rear view mirrors? I don't want to go the way of cal look, but I want my car to look mean. So what do you think? do you even think a '71 super should be ratted? I myself am far from a vw purist, but I love vws. My other car is a baja, so I can deal with messing with a blank vw canvas.

I would rather see a stock car then a rat rod. I am more for the stock then rods...my two cents. its your VW. Enjoy it how YOU WISH.

I know I won't make everyone happy when I finish this car, but it when it is done, I hope to make everyone from vw guys to hot rodders, or maybe it'll piss everyone off. Either way, I'm gonna have fun with this car.

Good thinkin. Like I said, I dont care for those rods, I like the stock. My opinion shouldnt matter to you. But do what you like. Your the only one that has to like it becuase your the driver. Don't listen to other peoples crap about what you should do to YOUR CAR. Have fun with it, drive it, and wave to the hippies man!

That's the point. Have fun with it. It IS your car, after all. At least you aren't doing it to a vintage model. :D |

the biggest problem will be that, even though I do some cool stuff with vws, I am still a neophyte vw guy. I just started working on vws in november last year, when I bought this car, then I went to work on the baja we bought, so now I need to come back to this car. I wanted to do something different with a bug, and I have yet to see many mean lookin VW rat rods.

It's your car...have fun with it! Personally, I am a fan of VWs no matter what they look like. If it's what you want to do to it, go for it. :D

I don't know, a 56 might look cool as a Rat Rod... After all, it is his car?!

yeah, but only if you were fixing up a beater would it be acceptable. A superb 56 being stripped into a rat rod would upset vw guys everywhere, even me. I think of hotrodding as taking something no so good and making it way better, so if something is in it dieing days, why not breath new life into it in a hotrod kinda way. Just my opinion. The biggest reason why I want to go the way I chose is because: a.) I don't have to worry about installing the correct parts to keep it the same as stock, b.) I can do whatever I want to it(see a), c.) I assure it will look mean when it has been finished.
