VW Trends just did an article on this very thing a couple of months back. I couldn't find it on their web site but you can order a back issue copy from them. Call them and ask themwhat month it was.

Go up on the VWTrends web site. www.vwtrendsweb.com. There should a copy of the article up on the site. Just print it out!

Good Luck.

73, why you going through all the trouble? Is your existing box bad? Why not get another box and not worry about it? They're not that expensive.

Did you figure out your charging problem?

Well originally, when i turned the wheel i felt a slip in the wheel as if a bearing is loose or damaged, so i decided to fix it. Box's range from 200-300 dollars.

Do you mean you had a little bit of freeplay in the steering wheel before the tires moved? If so, you can adjust the worm gear in the box to take up the slack.

$200-$300 for a SB steering box? You're kidding, right?

He kids you not. $200 is cheap even for a rebuilt unit. I would worry about quality at that price. $280-350 is more typical. These are a lot more expensive that the boxes for the standard bug. WolfburgWest is coming out with a rebuild kit in December for $109 plus shipping. I'm waiting for it.

Wowzers. I knew the late super boxes were different, but $200-$300? You can pick up a parts car for less. My brother in law just gave away a '73 super for free, to the junkyard for scrap. It was in pretty good shape, actually. No rust.

Why so expensive? Surely a bone-yard wouldn't charge you $200 for a used box. I bet you could pick up a used bos in decent shape on here for less than $100.

keifernet Sun Oct 26, 2003 7:09 pm

yeah the boxes are expensive, even " rebuilt"

hell a u joint shaft is 75 bucks!

I have several good used ones if someone is in need.

davidw99 Wed Oct 29, 2003 9:12 am

keifernet:

Do you mean you have good used u-joint shafts or good used steering boxes?

Dave

keifernet Sat Nov 01, 2003 8:28 pm

sorry about not getting back sooner, working a show away from home and getting to a computer for a samba session has not been easy.

I have both, steering boxes and u-joint shafts... good used from several supers I parted out not too long ago. lots of other front end and other parts too.

I was able to take my steering box apart. I am looking for gears. The gears are shot. Should wait til december when a gear kit is on the market for $100 or should i just buy a used steering box for $50 locally? i would buy the used if i new for sure is worked with out problem. My question is how can i be sure that the used one will work befor i buy it .? what should i do?

Thank

I already got a hood and steering box used for 150 in Mass.

the cost is all down to how long the sb box was used for.only 3-4 years i think. good old supply and demand i'm afraid
