Folks,
How do I know what type master cylinder I have on my 67 Fastback (drum brakes rear feeding off of one line, disk brakes forward off of separate lines)? There is an alarming disparity between the cost for a new dual circut MC (around $90) and a single circut MC (around $220). Mine has 2 ports for fluid entry, 2 ports for brake light pressure sensors, and 3 ports for brake lines, for a total of 7 openings. Most of the ones that the shops around here have include too many ports...likely an extra one for a pressure warning light. Any ideas of what mine is?
Thanks, |

2 fluid inlets = dual circuit master cylinder. '67 was the first year for this.
'66 was the 1-year only master cylinder because it was single cicuit but with disc brakes. Disc brakes require a different type of valving so the front brakes release appropriately. |

Everett,
I'm sure the answer is going to be, "Because they are ignorant," but why do the websites and shops keep trying to sell me a master cylinder with an extra port on it? Mine has the one on the front for a brake light, and two one each side opposite each other for the lines and other brake light. All the ones I've looked at or been offered have one port on the end, four ports on one side (one over the other) and two on the other side...did VW modify the Type III MC shortly after '67, or are these for other type VWs? If you close off the two extra ports, is this kind useable?
Thanks, |

| The last one I got for a 71 Type3, I got from my local Car Quest. It had 1 fitting for the rear brake line, 1 fitting for the rear brake light switch, 2 fittings for the front brake lines (1 each) and 1 fitting for the front brake light switch. This is a total of 5 openings plus there were 2 ports on top for the fluid to enter it. I don't know what you're buying or they are trying to sell, but this is all you need. I wish I could find my receipt for it, but I only paid about 26 bucks for it with a 90 day warranty, and they had to ship it in. I hope this helps. |
