My crank has woobled holes in it due to the gland nut loosening up I guess. Is it possible to retap it on the motor, to avoid replacing? There seems to be plenty of good metal.

I hate to tell you this, but it's time to pull it apart and replace the crank.

Are you talking about ovalled dowell pin holes? If so oversized pins are available but won't work if the holes are too big.

If the pinholes aren't aren't too wasted it is possible to repair them with oversized pins. If they are bad you can drill a new set of 4 in-betwen the bad ones with an 8 dowell jig. If they are really bad you have distorted the crankshaft end and you will need to replace the crank and flywheel. It is possible to redrill the dowell pins without taking the motor apart. You need the afore mentioned dowell jig, and a big drill press. You have to put the engine on it's nose on the drill press and with a couple hands to hold it drill the new or oversized holes. If you are unsure what I'm talking about you should go see a vw machine shop that can do this for you because the crank/ flywheel connection is a critical one as you have learned. And make sure you get the new gland nut on tight, and the end play adjusted correctly, so you don't bung it up again because these fixes only work once! Good luck with it!
